Post by

Natalia Kucirkova is senior lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her research concerns innovative ways of supporting shared book reading and the role of personalisation in early years. She is particularly interested in fostering children’s trans-media experiences and identity growth. Natalia’s research inspired the development of the Our Story tablet/smartphone app and has been published in a variety of outlets . She has been commended for her engagement with teachers and parents at a national and international level.

The quality of a child's digital book is measured by several criteria and there are currently several evaluation rubrics available for evaluating children's digital books. This is why I’m very excited that in the first UKLA Digital Book Award it will be teachers who will vote for the best children’s digital book.
As announced on Monday, The UK Literacy Association- in association with Booktrust and sponsored by The Open University- launched their Digital Book Award to recognise innovation, creativity and excellence in digital book publishing. The invitation is to all UK children’s digital book publishers and developers who produce apps and digital books for children aged 6-8 years. Designers have a unique chance to demonstrate how their design, technology and fresh thinking help to make a child’s experience of a story richer and more meaningful.
This year is a pilot scheme, it is planned to expand the award scheme next year. The winner will be invited to receive the award at the UKLA International Conference in Nottingham July 10th-12th , and UKLA has invited teachers and panel members to lead a seminar about the pilot.
All submissions will be shortlisted by a judging panel comprised of Natalia Kucirkova (Chair), Becky Parry (University of Leeds), Julia Gillen (University of Lancaster) and Christine Lockwood (head teacher first UKLA Literacy School of the Year).

The submission period runs from 9th till 25th of March, full entry terms and conditions and submission form is available from the UKLA website:
